Description

What is a Urea Blood Test?

Urea provides essential information about how well the kidneys and liver function. As such it is a waste product from the breakdown of amino acids found in proteins. When protein is broken down in the liver, nitrogen is produced in ammonia and is excreted in the urine. Most diseases that affect the kidneys or liver can affect the amount of urea in the blood.

Why get a Blood Urea test?

To diagnose various diseases – liver damage, urinary tract obstruction, congestive heart failure or gastrointestinal bleeding. And to evaluate kidney function and monitor the effectiveness of dialysis.

1 Test

Urea: measures the amount of urea nitrogen in your blood.

High Levels

  • Existence of a urinary tract obstruction.
  • Congestive heart failure or a recent heart attack.
  • Bleeding in the stomach or intestines (gastrointestinal bleeding).
  • Dehydration.
  • Aggravated diabetes mellitus.

Low Levels

  • Liver disease.
  • Pregnancy.

The target turnaround time for the Urea Blood test is 1 working day. The turnaround time is a guide only and will sometimes depend upon assay run schedules.

Missed appointments or cancellations less than 24 hours prior are not entitled to refunds. Rescheduling is possible but not guaranteed. Please contact the customer service prior to the appointment time to discuss cost and availability options. Please note that we do not draw blood from children under 16 years old.

  • Q: What happens if there is too much urea in the body?
    • A: Uremia may cause serious health complications such as fluid accumulation, electrolyte, hormone and metabolic problems.
  • Q: What happens if uremia is left untreated?
    • A: Left untreated, uremia is usually fatal and was always so before dialysis and transplantation were available.
  • Q: What removes urea from the body?
    • A: The kidneys remove urea from the blood through tiny nephrons filtering units.
  • Q: What causes high levels?
    • A: The two physiological causes are increased dietary protein and ageing.
  • Q: Do high levels mean dehydration?
    • A: Dehydration generally causes the levels to rise more than creatinine levels.
  • Q: If you exercise, can you lower the levels?
    • A: During exercise, total urea excretion (urine + sweat losses) increased 100% above pre- and postexercise values.
  • Q: How do you keep the levels low?
    • A: Proper hydration is the most effective way to lower BUN levels.
  • Q: What foods to avoid if the levels are high?
    • A: Don’t eat ham, bacon, sausage, hot dogs, lunch meats, chicken tenders or nuggets, or regular canned soup.
